Why tiling floorboards cracks tile, and it is not the tile's fault
A floorboard floor is a springy thing. It sits on joists, it flexes under your weight, and it grows and shrinks with the seasons like everything made of wood. Tile and grout are rigid. They do not bend, they break. So when a bouncy floor moves and the tile cannot, the grout lines crack first, then the tile, usually right where the floor flexes most.
Here is the opinion I will stand on: cracked floor tile is almost never a tile problem, it is a substrate problem, meaning the surface underneath, showing up in the tile. Fix the floor and the tile lasts. Ignore the floor and no tile on earth will save you.
First job: make the floor stiff enough to stop bouncing
Before any tile, the floor has to stop moving so much. The trade even has a number for it: a tiled floor should flex no more than its span divided by 360, which is the deflection limit, how much a floor is allowed to bend under load, that the TCNA Handbook sets for ceramic tile. In plain terms, a floor that visibly bounces is too bouncy to tile until it is stiffened.
Usually that means adding a layer: a proper tile backer board or a cement underlayment screwed down over the floorboards, which spreads the load and gives the tile a flat, stable base. Sometimes it means adding support to the joists underneath first. Either way, the bounce gets designed out before the tile goes on, not discovered after.
Then add a membrane, the layer that lets wood and tile disagree in peace
Even a stiff floor still moves a little with the weather. So the last layer before tile is a membrane, and this is where the job is won or lost. An uncoupling membrane sits between the subfloor and the tile and lets the two move independently, so the wood can shift a hair without dragging the tile along with it. A crack isolation membrane does a similar job over a surface that might crack.
This is not an optional upgrade. A tiling floor membrane rated to ANSI A118.12 is the difference between a floor that shrugs off seasonal movement and one that telegraphs every joist as a crack line by spring. Tiling a kitchen floor with porcelain tiles is the tough, easy choice
Once the floor is stiff and uncoupled, the tile is the fun part. For a floor that takes a beating, porcelain is the workhorse. Tiling a kitchen floor with porcelain tiles gives you a surface that absorbs 0.5% water or less (ANSI A137.1), shrugs off a dropped pan, and wipes clean with a mop.
Big porcelain planks that look like wood are popular over floorboards, and for good reason. You get the warm look of a timber floor with none of the swelling, scratching or sanding it back every few years. The only catch is the usual one: the flatter and stiffer the base, the better a large plank sits.

When you should not tile the floorboards at all
Some wooden floors are not worth tiling, and I will tell you straight. If the floor bounces like a diving board, or the joists are undersized, or the whole thing is a patchwork of soft spots, the honest fix is structural work first, or a different floor altogether. Tiling a floor that should have been rebuilt just buys you a better looking crack.
And on a top floor with a long span and a tight budget, sometimes a good luxury vinyl plank is the smarter call. It flexes with the floor instead of fighting it. I would rather point you there than sell you tile that cracks by next winter.
