Electric floor heating is just a warm cable under the tile
Let's clear up what this actually is, because 'radiant floor heating systems' sounds fancier than the thing itself. It's a thin electric cable that warms up when you switch it on, sitting right under your tile. The tile spreads that warmth evenly and holds onto it. That's the whole trick.
There are two common forms. One is a loose cable you snake back and forth by hand, which lets you steer the heat to the spots your feet actually land. The other is a ready-made mat with the cable already spaced and stuck to a mesh, which you just roll out. Loose cable gives you control. A mat is faster. Both end up doing the same job.
The cable sits in an uncoupling membrane. That's a plastic mat covered in little studs, the orange stuff in the photos, and it pulls double duty. It holds the heat cable in place between the studs, and it lets the tile and the subfloor move at slightly different rates without cracking the tile. Schluter's DITRA-Heat is the common one. Warm feet and crack insurance in a single layer, which is a rare two-for-one in this trade.

Heated floors earn their keep in the bathroom first
If you only heat one floor in the house, make it the bathroom. Heated floors in a bathroom hit the sweet spot. The floor is tile, tile is cold, and you're standing on it barefoot at the worst possible hour of the day.
A small room also warms up fast, so you get the payoff without heating half the county. Entryways and kitchens are the next best picks. Cold tile by the back door, cold tile in front of the sink. Anywhere your bare or socked feet spend real time is a fair candidate.
Where's it not worth it? A floor you walk across but never stand on. A hallway, a laundry nook, a spare room nobody uses. Heat there is heat you're paying to warm the soles of your shoes. Put it where the feet are.

Tile and radiant heat are made for each other
Here's why tile is the natural partner for any under floor heating. Tile conducts heat well, which is a fancy way of saying it passes the warmth straight up to your feet instead of hoarding it. Wood and carpet fight the heat. Tile welcomes it in.
Porcelain is the pick for most floors. It soaks up under 0.5% of its weight in water, by the standard ANSI A137.1, so it's tough, stable, and completely unbothered by warming up and cooling down every day. Natural stone works too and feels wonderful warm. It just wants sealing, like it always does. The Tile Council of North America handbook covers how these floor assemblies go together, heat or no heat.
So the tile you already wanted is almost certainly fine over heat. You're not shopping for some special 'heated floor tile.' You're choosing tile, the same as ever, and adding warmth underneath it.

How a heated floor goes in, subfloor to warm tile
Here's how a heated floor installation actually happens, start to finish. First, the subfloor gets flat and solid, same as any tile job, because a bouncy floor cracks tile whether it's heated or not.
Then the uncoupling membrane goes down in thinset. Thinset is the mortar that bonds everything to the floor. The heat cable gets set into the membrane in your planned pattern, with a floor sensor tucked between two cable runs so it can read the real floor temperature later.
Now the tile. You trowel thinset over the whole thing and set the tile so the mortar fully surrounds every cable, with no air pockets. That part matters. An air pocket over a cable is a hot spot waiting to happen, and ANSI A108.5 sets the coverage standards for exactly this reason. The Ceramic Tile Education Foundation trains installers on this coverage detail, because it's the boring part that decides whether the floor lasts.
One thing that isn't my job: the final power connection. The cable and the thermostat get wired to your electrical, on their own circuit, by a licensed electrician. I lay the heat and set the tile over it. The electrician makes it live. Everyone stays in their lane, and yours ends up warm.
The thermostat is the brains, and the floor sensor is the bit people forget
The thermostat is what makes a heated floor worth living with. A programmable floor heating thermostat runs on a schedule, so the floor is warm at 6am when you get up and off at 9am when you leave. Heating a bathroom floor around the clock would be like leaving the oven on all day for the one slice of toast you wanted. The schedule is the whole point.
It reads the floor through that little sensor set into the mortar, not the room air, so it knows how warm the tile actually is. If the sensor ever fails years down the line, a good install runs it inside a conduit so it can be pulled and swapped without touching the tile. The cheap installs bury it solid and hope for the best. Ask which one you're getting.
And here's the one strong opinion I'll hand you: buy one manufacturer's kit and don't Frankenstein it. The cable, the membrane and the thermostat from a single system are tested and warrantied together. Mix a bargain cable from one brand with another brand's control and a third brand's membrane, and you've built something nobody stands behind. A Schluter heated floor kit, or any single-brand system, exists so all the parts are designed to get along. Save twenty dollars on one piece and you can void the lot.
What actually drives the cost of a heated floor
I can't put a number on your floor from here, and anyone who quotes heated floors cost sight unseen is guessing. What I can do is tell you what moves it.
Floor area is the big one. More square footage means more cable, more membrane, more time. After that it's the shape of the room. A simple rectangle lays out fast. A room full of cabinets, a toilet flange and odd corners means routing the cable carefully around the bits you don't heat.
Then there's the subfloor. If it needs flattening or firming up before anything goes down, that's real work, and it belongs in the estimate rather than turning up as a surprise. The thermostat you choose and whether the tile is already bought round it out.
One thing trips people up: the heat and the tile are two separate costs, not one. You were going to tile that floor anyway. The heating system is the part you're adding. I give a free written estimate after seeing the room, so the figure is tied to your actual floor and not a number I made up to sound good.
When you should not put heat under your floor
I'll talk you out of a heated floor more often than you'd think. If you're not redoing the floor anyway, don't tear up good tile just to add warmth. The heat lives under the tile, so it only makes sense when the tile is already coming up or going down new. Retrofitting it under a floor you like means demolishing that floor first, which is rarely worth it.
If the room is carpeted or getting wood, this isn't your product. Electric radiant floor heating is a tile and stone thing. Under carpet it's smothered, under floating wood it's a headache, and either way you've wandered out of our lane.
And if you just want the whole house warmer, that's a heating question for a different trade, not a tile cable in one bathroom. What I do is stop the tile floors you walk on barefoot from being a shock. If that's the itch, a heated floor scratches it perfectly. If it isn't, keep your money and I'll tell you so.
